Kinew right to move fast on gas tax relief

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is applauding Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew for introducing legislation to cut the province’s gas tax.

“This is great news for Manitoba taxpayers,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “Making gas more affordable makes it easier for Manitoba families to get to work, drive to the grocery store and take their kids to hockey practice.”

The Manitoba government introduced legislation to cut the gas tax for six months. The Manitoba government currently charges Manitobans 14 cents per litre of gasoline through the provincial gas tax.

The average Manitoba family with two cars will save $250 over the six months of the cut, according to the government. Families would save $500 if the cut was to be extended for an entire year.

The provincial governments of Alberta, Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador have all cut gas taxes to save drivers money.

“Kinew is right to recognize that Manitobans need relief at the pumps as soon as possible,” Haubrich said. “Kinew’s next step should be to make this gas tax cut permanent.”
