Taxpayers call for sales tax cut and balanced budget in Prince Edward Island

Jay Goldberg Nov 23, 2023 | Prince Edward Island

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is releasing its 2024-25 Prince Edward Island pre-budget proposal, calling on the King government to cut the sales tax, end the government employee wage premium and balance the books.

“With Islanders facing soaring living costs, now is the time for Premier Dennis King to be bold and cut taxes,” said CTF Interim Atlantic Director Jay Goldberg. “King could make a historic move by cutting the provincial portion of the HST by two percentage points. That would save the average family $702 next year alone and make Prince Edward Island the province with the lowest sales tax in the region.”

The CTF’s proposal also calls on the King government to replace corporate welfare with business tax relief, make bracket creep relief permanent and return all non-health spending to 2022 levels.

“King deserves credit for cutting income tax rates for 2024, which will save Islanders up to $926 next year,” said Goldberg. “But family budgets are being squeezed even further and King needs to do more. Now is the time to be prudent with taxpayer dollars, balance the books and lower taxes.”
