Taxpayers Federation applauds Ford’s gas tax cut

Jay Goldberg Apr 04, 2022 | Ontario

Toronto, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is applauding the Ford government for keeping its commitment to lower gas taxes by 5.7 cents per litre.

“This is a great day for Ontario taxpayers and it will save taxpayers a lot of money at the gas pump,” said CTF Ontario Director Jay Goldberg. “After four years of waiting, Premier Doug Ford is finally delivering on his promise to cut taxes for hardworking Ontarians.”

The Ford government has announced it plans to cut the province’s gasoline excise tax by 5.7 cents per litre for a six-month period starting July 1, 2022. A family filling up a minivan and a sedan once a week stands to save roughly $190 by the end of the six-month relief period.

Under the Ford government’s temporary tax cut plan, Ontario gas taxes will increase by 5.7 cents per litre as of Jan. 1, 2023.

“While Ontario taxpayers will welcome lower gas prices at the pumps, Ford promised Ontarians four years ago that they would receive a permanent gas tax cut,” said Goldberg. “So there’s work left to do on this announcement. At the end of this six-month relief period, the Ford government should keep its word and make this tax cut permanent.”
